The recently concluded Lagos Theatre Festival 2024 brought together a constellation of talent, with renowned figures such as Joke Silva, Francis Onwuchei, and other luminaries gracing the event in Lagos, Nigeria. Held on Saturday, March 2, this festival served as a vibrant showcase of theatrical performances, captivating audiences and emphasizing the festival’s dedication to fostering cultural exchange and uniting artistic communities from Nigeria and beyond.
This year’s festival presented a diverse range of theatrical expressions, featuring a mix of plays, musicals, and poetry performances that highlighted the ingenuity and creativity of both local and international artists. From immersive discussions on the power of theatre to thought-provoking dramatic presentations, attendees were treated to a tapestry of storytelling that mirrored the cultural richness of the Lagos Theatre Festival.
The 2024 edition of the Lagos Theatre Festival underscored the transformative potential of theatre in bridging divides and nurturing empathy in a world characterized by diversity. The Soiree/Press Night, held on Thursday, February 29, featured captivating performances by Niall De Burca, a distinguished storyteller from Ireland, further solidifying the festival’s global reach. The presence of Mr. Peter Ryan, the Ambassador of Ireland to Nigeria, reaffirmed the commitment of Culture Ireland to fostering collaborations with the Lagos Theatre Festival.
The variety of shows that festival artistic director Lydia Idakula had selected captivated theater enthusiasts. Each play, including “Anatomy of a Woman” by Nevana Productions, “Tuti” by Kininso Koncepts Productions, and “Before I Let You Go” by B/Rated, resonated with audiences, evoking a range of emotions and sparking meaningful dialogues.
In addition to the stage performances, the festival featured a stimulating conversation with Ms. Tola Akerele, the Incoming Director General of the National Theatre, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas and knowledge among theatre aficionados, professionals, and emerging talents.

Distinguished personalities, including Gbemi Shasore, Olarotimi Fakunle, Lota Chukwu, Joshua Alabi, Francis Onwuchei, Joke Silva, and Supo Shasore, Chairman of the LTF Board, graced the Lagos Theatre Festival 2024 Showcase with their presence. Bikiya Graham-Douglas, the Executive Director, expressed her delight, stating, “The Lagos Theatre Festival continues to be a beacon for the arts, nurturing creativity and fostering cultural dialogue. We are thrilled by the overwhelming response from the artistic community and the public.”
The Lagos Theatre Festival 2024 exemplified the resilience and adaptability of the arts in the face of challenges, showcasing that creativity knows no bounds. Plans are already in motion for the next edition, a full-fledged festival in 2025 dedicated to promoting theatre in unconventional spaces and seamlessly integrating into any given environment.
