NewsReport Nigeria gathered tha the secret police emphasized that the elements are using sensationalism, fake news, false alarms, skewed reporting or narratives, and incorrect information to sow discord and tension, which could lead to violence both before and after the exercises.

It, however, warned residents of the Federal Capital Territory and other states of the Federation where the inauguration would be held the same day not to be unruly or try to defy security protocols.

Peter Afunanya, the spokesman of the secret police, stated in Abuja Thursday morning that he advised citizens, the media, and civil society organizations to adhere strictly to security and civil protocols during the events.

“The Service is, however, aware of plans by subversive elements to disrupt the programmes in parts of the country. The aim is to undermine security agencies’ efforts at ensuring peaceful ceremonies as well as create panic and fear among members of the public.

“This is more so because such undesirable acts will serve no purpose other than destroying national unity and cohesion. “In addition, all unauthorized (and unaccredited) persons are warned to stay away from restricted and certain designated areas at the event venues,” Afunanya said.

He called on Nigerians to remain calm before, during, and after the inauguration, adding that the secret police would continue to collaborate with the Nigerian police, the military, and other sister security agencies in order to tame all the threats.

When Daily Trust reminded Afunanya that the service has yet to make any arrests or name any key players in the plot despite raising the alarm, he said that among the many roles that the service plays is an advisory role.

He said the media would be properly briefed when any arrest is made, urging the media not to vitiate the essence of the reportage.

“Do you mean there is nothing to report?” Why should people be unruly? Defy security protocols?” the secret police officer queried when responding to our correspondent’s inquiry.

He added, “The media informs and educates. Inform the people not to be violent or engage in acts likely to undermine the inaugurations. You owe the citizenry that. If and when there is an arrest, you will know. Don’t vitiate the core of the reportage.
