The appointment of Akirun of Ikirun sparks violent protests, claiming lives.

A protest over the nomination of Prince Yinusa Akadiri as Akirun of Ikirun resulted in five persons being shot yesterday in Ikirun, the seat of the Ifelodun Local Government in Osun State.

NewsReport learned that after the weekly executive council meeting on Wednesday night, the Osun State Government declared Akadiri the new monarch.

 

The Nation learned that after Akadiri’s appointment was announced, the town was rocked by unrest as angry members of the ruling families and locals engaged in physical violence against one another.

Protesters went on the rampage as they made bonfires on major streets of the town, paralyzing commercial activities.

A resident told our correspondent that police and Amotekun operatives later quelled the protest.

Confirming the incident, police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola said five persons were shot during the incident.
