BREAKING: Osun Residents Defy Warning, Protest Against Hardship and Insecurity
Hundreds of residents in Osogbo, Osun State, have taken to the streets to protest the country’s current economic hardship and growing insecurity. This demonstration transpired in defiance of a warning issued by the police, urging residents to reconsider their plans for the protest due to the potential risks of violence.
News reports that protesters, undeterred by the cautionary advice, marched through the streets brandishing banners and placards while vocalizing anti-government sentiments. The procession, which commenced at the Old Garage area, traversed through Freedom Park, Orisunbare, Ola-Iya, Alekuwodo, and culminated in the Oke-Fia district. Notably, the Nigerian Police Force closely monitored this peaceful demonstration.
The leader of the protesters, Comrade Waheed Lawal, articulated that the policies of the current government are perceived as detrimental to the populace, lacking in initiatives aimed at alleviating the suffering of the masses. He emphasized, “They must do whatever they need to do to make sure that the people benefit from the reforms. They promised us renewed hope, but what they are giving us now is renewed hardship. We reject renewed hardship in our lives and in our economy because Nigerians deserve the best.”
Lawal further highlighted the pressing need for a secure environment, stressing the impact of prevailing insecurity on daily life. He expressed concern about the pervasive sense of unease, as evidenced by a fear of traveling due to the risk of kidnapping. The recent spate of abductions, including those of monarchs, has further compounded the prevailing state of insecurity. Lawal urged the government to prioritize the provision of security for lives and property, asserting that any government failing in this regard forfeits its legitimacy.
In conclusion, Lawal conveyed the resolute stance of the protesters, stating, “What we are saying is simple; we are ready to face the government on this hardship. We have started this struggle today, and if the government fails to listen to us, we will continue to mobilize our people to resist this hardship because enough is enough.”
