The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) offices in Imo, Anambra and Enugu states have been burnt by hoodlums.
NewsReport Nigeria gathered that on Sunday night, the Commission’s office in Imo State’s Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area, the State Headquarters office in Awka, Anambra State, and the Igboeze South Local Government Area office in Enugu State were all attacked.
This online news medium understand that INEC classified the rising attacks on its facilities as a national emergency in a statement by National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) met in emergency session today, Monday 24th May 2021, as attacks on its facilities in several states of the Federation continue unabated,” according to the announcement.
“Three Commission offices have been attacked in the recent instances in the states of Anambra, Imo, and Enugu. The attacks took occurred at various intervals on the night of Sunday, May 23, 2021, according to the Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) for Anambra State, Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji; his counterpart in Imo State, Professor Francis Ezeonu; and that of Enugu State, Emeka Ononamadu.
“The State Headquarters office in Awka was set ablaze in the most catastrophic onslaught on the Commission’s facilities thus far,” the statement said.
The assailants were methodical and selective in their selection of victims. The Pavillion, which functions as a polling station during big elections, was destroyed by fire.
Two warehouses storing electoral materials were burned down, dealing a serious setback to our preparations for the Governorship election on November 6, 2021.
“All 376 electric producing equipment, new and old (but workable), for all Electoral Wards, as well as the spare numbers for backup, were entirely burned. The electric generators were recently moved from the LGA offices to the State HQ in the notion that it is more secure than the LGA offices.”
