Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was presented before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday.

NewsReport gathered that the “Self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed secessionist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been intercepted via the coordinated efforts of Nigerian intelligence and security services,” stated Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami.

Here are nine facts about Nnamdi Kanu’s re-arrest.

  1. Kanu went into hiding in 2017 after an alleged military invasion of his residence, months after being granted bail while being charged for treasonable felony. Following that, the federal government labeled him wanted.

  1. Although no details on where he was re-arrested are available, Malami stated that he was re-arrested on Sunday, July 27.

  1. Kanu was brought before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court’s Abuja Division on Tuesday, who ordered his remand in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in response to a motion by the federal government’s lawyer, Shuaibu Labaran.

  1. Kanu blamed his absence in court on a security agent invasion of his home, for which he claimed he had to escape underground to prevent being assassinated.

  1. His trial has been adjourned until July 26.

  1. He was re-arrested and brought back to Nigeria to face trial after disappearing while on bail on an 11-count charge.

  1. He was urged to contact his lawyers to find out what had transpired in the case while he was abroad.

  1. After evading bail, he was accused of engaging in subversive actions such as encouraging violence against Nigeria and Nigerian State and institutions via television, radio, and online broadcasts.

  1. Kanu was also accused of stirring violence, particularly in the South East, which led in the deaths and destruction of citizens, military, paramilitary, and police forces, as well as the destruction of civil institutions and symbols of authority.
