The massive 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Petroleum Refinery has finally started producing aviation fuel and diesel after years of waiting, signaling a dramatic shift in Nigeria’s economic situation. The long-awaited activation of the refinery brings hope for an end to the costly importation of fuel that has persistently plagued Nigeria’s economy for decades.
Late Friday, a captivating video of the refinery coming to life began to circulate in Nigeria, igniting widespread excitement across various sectors. This development is poised to revolutionize Africa’s largest economy and promises a more consistent supply of fuel across the West African coast. Moreover, the refinery’s operations are expected to generate employment opportunities, bolster the country’s gross domestic product, and alleviate the foreign exchange crisis.
Aliko Dangote, the President of Dangote Group, expressed his elation and extended his gratitude to several key figures and organizations who played pivotal roles in the realization of this ambitious project. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received special acknowledgment for his unwavering support, encouragement, and insightful guidance throughout the project’s journey.
Dangote also expressed his appreciation to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) for their unwavering support. Furthermore, he conveyed heartfelt thanks to the Nigerian populace for their belief in and support of this historic endeavor.
“We have initiated the production of diesel and aviation fuel, and these products will soon be available in the market pending regulatory approvals,” Dangote announced. “We are grateful to President Bola Tinubu for his instrumental support in making our vision a reality. His visionary leadership and meticulous attention to detail have been crucial in overcoming obstacles and expediting the project’s actualization. We also extend our gratitude to the NNPC, NUPRC, and NMDPRA for their invaluable support. These organizations have been steadfast partners in this momentous journey. We also thank the Nigerian people for their unwavering belief and support in this project.”
Dangote emphasized the significance of this achievement for Nigeria, highlighting its demonstration of the country’s capacity to develop and deliver large-scale capital projects. “This marks a pivotal moment for our nation, showcasing our ability to undertake and deliver substantial projects. It is a game changer for our country, and I am immensely gratified by the realization of this project,” he remarked.
The refinery has thus far received six million barrels of crude oil at its two Single Point Moorings (SPMs) located 25 kilometers from the shore. The first crude oil delivery took place on December 12, 2023, with the sixth cargo being delivered on January 8, 2024.
Notably, the refinery has the capability to load 2,900 trucks per day at its truck-loading gantries. The products manufactured at the refinery will adhere to Euro V specifications. The refinery’s design aligns with the emission norms set by the World Bank, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), European standards, and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), employing cutting-edge technology.
Dangote extended sincere appreciation to the local and offshore bankers and financiers, acknowledging their patience and unwavering support during challenging times. Furthermore, he expressed gratitude to the Government of Lagos State, particularly under the leadership of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for their proactive efforts in swiftly resolving the numerous challenges encountered during the project’s execution.
“I also extend heartfelt thanks to our host communities and their traditional leaders for their enduring patience, forbearance, and admirable willingness to collaborate with us in finding amicable and mutually beneficial resolutions to the various issues encountered during the construction of this monumental facility. Our staff have also made immense contributions to the success of this project, and I express my profound gratitude to them,” Dangote concluded.
