Aliko Dangote, the renowned business magnate and Africa’s wealthiest individual, has launched a significant humanitarian effort through his foundation. The foundation has commenced the distribution of rice worth over N13 billion to underprivileged communities across Nigeria, marking a significant stride towards alleviating hardship in the nation.
The primary focus of this philanthropic endeavor is to provide nutritious meals to at least 10,000 Muslims observing the holy month of Ramadan in Kano State. Samira Sanusi, a representative of the foundation in Kano, highlighted the ambitious objective of distributing one million bags of rice, totaling over N13 billion in value, across all 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The meals being distributed free of charge during Ramadan include a diverse range of dishes such as jollof rice, plain rice with stew, jollof spaghetti, yam, beans, and chicken and beef. Each meal pack also includes a bottle of water and a beverage, ensuring a wholesome and fulfilling dining experience for every recipient.
Reports from Premium Times indicate that these packed meals are being disseminated at various locations in Kano City and its environs, including Juma’at mosques, streets, correctional facilities, orphanages, and detention centers, among others. This widespread distribution strategy aims to reach the most vulnerable segments of society and provide them with essential sustenance during a period of heightened need.
Mrs. Sanusi shed light on the longstanding commitment of Aliko Dangote to supporting the less fortunate in Kano, citing the initiation of a free bread distribution program four years ago as one of the many instances of his philanthropic contributions. She further revealed that Mr. Dangote has been quietly extending support to those in need in Kano for over three decades, underscoring his deep-rooted commitment to social welfare and community development.
Highlighting the scale of impact, Mrs. Sanusi emphasized that the feeding program in Kano serves 10,000 residents daily, providing them with breakfast, lunch, and dinner—a remarkable feat that has been sustained for more than three decades. This initiative, originating from Mr. Dangote’s mother’s residence in Koki and various cooking sites, exemplifies a sustained and impactful approach to addressing food insecurity and poverty in the region.
