The Islamic terrorist group known as the Taliban retook Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital city, a few days ago on Sunday, but many analysts had predicted the fall of the landlocked Asian country when US President Joe Biden began the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan in early July NewsReport gathered.
To forestall the war-torn country’s impending collapse and promote peace and stability, ex-Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo traveled to Kabul in July and met with some of the country’s officials as well as envoys from neighboring nations.
Obasanjo, unquestionably one of Africa’s most illustrious global citizens, met with Pakistan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Mansoor Ahmad Khan, members of the Aga Khan Development Network, and other diplomats. The Asian and African Development Network (AKDN) is an international organization that “brings together a number of development agencies, institutions, and programs that work largely in Asia and Africa’s poorest areas.”
On July 5, Khan announced Obasanjo’s attendance at the meeting in Kabul by tweeting, “Today, frank discussions at lunch with former President of Nigeria, Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, hosted by AKDN Ambassador, (Hijri) Sheherzade, about promoting long-term peace, stability, reconciliation, and development in Afghanistan.”
Between 1999 and 2007, Obasanjo, Nigeria’s democratically elected President, was essential in the restoration of peace in many countries of Africa, including Liberia, Sudan, and Ethiopia, among others.
Between July 1975 and February 1976, the former Nigerian military head of state served on numerous peace panels, including those of the United Nations, African Union and Economic Community of West African States.
On Thursday, the embattled National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, hailed Obasanjo’s “peace wand” as a “global personality” who “resolves conflicts all over the world.” In fact, the most recent area I learned Baba visited was Afghanistan; despite the dire circumstances there, he went and returned alive.”
