Protest on the UNILAG campus over hike in tuition fees
Students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka campus started to voice their discontent with the development as word of the increase in tuition fees spread there on Friday.
The hike, which did not go down well with the students, led to a mild protest at the campus on Thursday, as some were heard shouting ‘VC must go’.
NewsReport Nigeria gathered that the new fee regime, which ranges between N100,750 and N230,250, depending on the course of study and level, was announced on Friday in a statement issued by the university management and published by the Head of the Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem.
“The adjustment in fees that will take effect from the 1st semester of the 2023–2024 academic session is in view of the prevailing economic realities and the need for the university to be able to meet its obligations to its students, staff, and municipal service providers, among others.
“It is also pertinent to note that the university has not increased its obligatory fees in recent years.

“Management, therefore, seeks the kind understanding and support of students and other stakeholders with the assurance of its commitment to ensuring that students get the best learning experience.”
However, a cursory look at the new fee regime showed that the tuition segment of the bill was blank.
Items listed on the new mandatory charges covered registration, identity card, examination, library services, ICT, laboratory or studio, accreditation, medical services, sports, endowment, and TISHA.

Summary of Charges
The summary of the new mandatory charges shows that students without laboratory or studio engagement will pay N126,325 while those with laboratory or studio engagement will pay N176,325.
Also, returning undergrads with a laboratory or studio will pay 140,250; without a laboratory or studio, N100,750; and medical students are expected to pay N190,250.

The statement that students will pay charges for the toxicity test for Screening (N10,000), Utility Charges (N20,000) by all undergraduates, and the convocation fee for final-year students
N30,000 and ‘charges for field trips where such is a mandatory requirement of the course of study will be determined as the need arises’.
Nonetheless, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, who could not be reached by the Daily Independent, revealed in an interview that the process of introducing the new fees predated the subsidy removal, saying the university had commenced engagement with relevant stakeholders, including students and parents, since January.
The professor of Medical microbiology declared that the old fee regime is no longer sustainable, noting that the university has consistently recorded deficits of about N1 billion annually.
“When students are on campus, the university pays as much as N160 million every month to a power distribution company, “apart from the huge costs we incur on diesel, water, and janitorial services, among others.”
Other universities that have home charges include UNIBEN, UNIMAID, UNIABUJA, and others.
