Niger’s Government Suspends Cattle Markets and Prohibits the Sale of Fuel in Jerry Cans.

As part of measures to combat the rise of cases of armed banditry and abductions, the government of the Niger state announced the suspension of all weekly cattle markets in the State, effective 1 September 2021 NewsReport gathered.

A statement published on Tuesday also said that any truck transporting cattle into the State should have a traveling letter and proof of origin and destination. Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, Secretary of the State Government.

The state was also prohibited from selling oil products in jerry cans or other containers at tank stations, as well as from running vehicles that carry firewood and wood.

According to him, motorbikes are allowed to run only in Minna and its surroundings between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The declaration reads;

“Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, Governor of State of Niger, approved the following measures, effective Wednesday, September 1, 2021 as part of the security challenges in the country:

(I). All weekly livestock markets are suspended throughout the state.

(ii.) Any carriage of cattle into the State shall display the Waybill and proof of the origin and destination of the cattle purchased.

The petroleum products are hereby prohibited to be sold in jerry tanks or in other containers at state filling stations.

(iv). All filling stations should not sell petrol of more than N10,000 to each vehicle at a time and should be wary of vehicles or motorcycles coming for repeat purchases.

(v). Government suspends the operation of trucks carrying firewood/timber across the State. (vi). All motorcycles are only allowed to operate from 6:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m across the State.

2. Government is aware of the inconveniences the measures would cause the people, but the decision was taken in the overall interest of the State.

3. Government has condemned in strong terms the degree of carnage and mayhem Bandits and Kidnappers are causing to some parts of the State and reiterated it’s continued determination to rid the State of any security threat.

4. Government is calling on the people of the State to be very vigilant, security conscious and report all suspicious characters, movements or objects to security agents, adding that security is everybody’s business and that all hands must be on deck in complementing government’s efforts toward safeguarding lives and property of citizens.
