BREAKING: Oneya, a former governor of Kano, has died.

Brig. General Dominic Oneya (rtd), the former military administrator of Kano State and former football administrator, died at the age of 73.

News Report gathered that Brig. Gen Oneya died on Thursday following a brief illness, according to Abubakar Aminu Ibrahim, media advisor to Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Oneya served as the Chairman of the Football Association (NFA), which is now known as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

During General Sani Abacha’s military administration, he was also the military governor of Kano from August 1996 until August 1998.

During the transitional rule of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Oneya served as the Administrator of Benue State from August 1998 to May 1999, turning over responsibility to the elected executive governor George Akume on May 29, 1999.

The former military administrator was born on May 26, 1948, in Apapa Local Government Area, Lagos state, in Agbarho, Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta.

He attended the Baptist Academy, Yaba, Lagos (1962–1967), then enlisted in the Nigerian Defence Academy in May 1969, earning a commission in the Infantry Corps in September 1971.

Oneya attended the University of Ife, Ile-Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) from 1977–1980, earning a B.Sc degree in physical education.

He attended the Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna (1983–1984) and the Canadian Land Force Command and Staff College, Kingston, Ontario, Canada (1987–1988).
