Bandits Deserve Respect and Empathy; They Have Children and Families — Sheikh Gumi, an Islamic Cleric
NewsReport gathered that Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, an Islamic scholar, has asked security forces to cease murdering bandits who are destroying communities, kidnapping students, and killing Nigerians.
The contentious clergyman demanded that they be honored and given human rights.
“Like us, the bandits have families and children. The first level entails using psychological tactics on them.
They have communicated their displeasure and are prepared to change.“ The bandits, like us, have empathy; they have families and children.
The first stage is to employ psychological techniques on them. They have expressed their dissatisfaction and are willing to change.
“They should be recognized and given all the human rights that everyone has,” Gumi said Thursday at Arewa House in Kaduna at a peace conference hosted by the Center for the Advancement of Human Dignity and Value.
The controversial self-appointed mediator to assist in finding a solution to banditry, Gumi, said Nigeria will spend less to enlighten bandits than it is spending on arms and ammunition, Peoples Gazette reports.
“Some are suggesting killing them. All because they are killing. For three year’s you have spent $1 billion, and now you need another $1 billion. But, I said one-third of that will enlighten them, and they will stop killing. Have you tried it? Nobody tried it,” Gumi said.
In contrast to Gumi, Katsina Governor Aminu Masari stated he is disappointed that bandits have continued to commit crimes despite being granted amnesty.
Hundreds of people have been abducted in multiple coordinated attacks throughout North-East states, prompting school closures in Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, and Zamfara at various points.
In July, bandits destroyed a Nigerian Air Force plane in Zamfara, then in August, they assaulted the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, killing two and kidnapping a Major.
