We do not Remain Silent in the Aftermath of Nnamdi Kanu’s Arrest, Ohanaeze Tells Critics
Alex Ogbonnia, the National Publicity Secretary of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has stated that the Igbo are not silent on the issues concerning Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra NewsReport gathered.
Ogbonnia, who spoke exclusively to Saturday PUNCH on Friday, stated that the Igbo have been meeting to discuss the issue of the IPOB leader, though they have not made their deliberations public.
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, had formed a 28-member committee comprised of prominent South-West personalities to investigate the arrest of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, and other South-West-related issues.
Some critics, however, slammed the south-easterners for allegedly failing to unite in their fight for Kanu’s release.
In response to the criticism, the Ohanaeze spokesperson stated that it was not a fact that the Igbo were not united.
“When his trial began, the Ohanaeze also provided him with legal services. To ensure Nnamdi Kanu’s fair trial, we formed a legal team led by Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide’s National Legal Adviser and eminent Igbo leaders to monitor the legal proceedings throughout the trial.”
Ogbonnia stated that the South-East elders would never abandon Kanu as an orphan and that they were meeting to make decisions on the case.
He stated, “We are not silent on Nnamdi Kanu’s affairs; we have been meeting.” We are not quiet because Ohaeneze and other Igbo elders have met.
“We are a people who stand together. The Igbo are one of the world’s most united tribes. I don’t want anyone to misrepresent the Igbos’ view of Nnamdi Kanu. We have been holding meetings to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu is not left orphaned. We don’t want it to appear that we abandoned Nnamdi Kanu. We’ve been meeting to discuss possible solutions to the problem.”
Kanu, who is charged with treason, treasonable felony, terrorism, and illegal possession of firearms, among other things, jumped bail in 2017 and fled the country.
“The Igbo are meeting, it’s just that we aren’t publicizing it,” he explained. We meet and come to an agreement on the next steps. The Igbo elders met and instructed Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe to stand as a surety for Nnamdi Kanu when he needed one.
