Sunday Igboho Returns to Nigeria for Mother’s Burial
Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has made his return to Nigeria after a two-year exile in the Benin Republic. His return to the country is in order to attend the burial of his mother, who passed away while he was facing trial in the Benin Republic.
NewsReport Nigeria reports that a statement from Sunday Igboho’s spokesperson, Olayomi Koiki, confirmed his presence in the country for the solemn occasion. In a succinct statement accompanied by a video shared on social media, Koiki said, “I can confirm that Chief Sunday Adeyemo, a.k.a. Sunday Igboho, is currently on his way to Igboho Town for the final burial of his mother, Mrs. S. A. Adeyemo.”
Koiki disclosed that the remains of Mrs. S. A. Adeyemo were recently taken from Saki Town mortuary. Igboho was seen at the mortuary with people who appeared to be attending the burial ceremony in a video that Koiki shared.
Recalling the circumstances that led to Igboho’s exile, it can be remembered that he fled Nigeria in 2021 following a raid by the Department of State Services (DSS) on his residence in Ibadan, Oyo State. The DSS operation was based on allegations of terrorism and illegal possession of weapons against Igboho.
Subsequently, Igboho was apprehended in the Benin Republic while attempting to travel to Germany to reunite with his family. However, in October of the previous year, Igboho announced that he was legally permitted to depart Cotonou for Nigeria and other destinations.
Sunday Igboho’s return to Nigeria for his mother’s burial marks a significant moment in his tumultuous journey as he navigates the complexities of his activism and personal life.
