To prevent the Academic Staff Union of Universities from going on another strike, students from various universities have started pressing for cooperation between universities and educational banking systems (ASUU).
Students feel that governmental contributions to the sector are insufficient to construct the educational system that the country requires and that the sector can only be enhanced through private support. NewsReport gathered
This was made known in Abuja at the first Policy Competition for university students, titled ‘Improving the quality of Tertiary institutions in Nigeria’ by Future Pathways Development Initiatives (FPDI).
Executive Director, of FPDI, Ayokunnu Ojeniyi, said about 520 entries were made by students from institutions all over the country and that a major outcome was the conclusion that the allocations to the sector need to be supported by private funding.
“One thing that stood out is that there seems to be a general agreement that there was a funding problem and that the government alone cannot solve the problem. So there were ideas on how to solve the problem. Some looked at the government and parents, the possibility of student loans, and educational banks to improve funding because it is clear that the budgetary allocations alone cannot ensure the growth universities need.
“We are going to be publishing the top 10 entries and distill it in a way that would be easily consumed,” Ojeniyi said.
