Strengthening Partnerships: The E.U. Delegation’s 4-Day Visit to Nigeria
The Council of the European Union’s Africa Working Group (COAFR) has embarked on a significant journey as they kick-start their four-day visit to Nigeria, with Abuja as their initial landing point. Scheduled from February 26th to 29th, 2024, the delegation’s packed agenda is brimming with crucial meetings with a diverse array of stakeholders from governmental bodies, the private sector, civil society organizations, and more in both Abuja and Lagos.
The primary objective of COAFR, which is responsible for overseeing the EU’s external policies towards Sub-Saharan Africa’s 46 nations, the African Union, and sub-regional entities like ECOWAS, is to foster stronger ties and cooperation during their stay in Nigeria.
The delegation’s itinerary includes a series of strategic meetings in Abuja with key Federal Government departments such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, among others. Furthermore, engaging in discussions with the ECOWAS Commission will be pivotal, focusing on regional developments and the integration process.
Transitioning to Lagos, the COAFR delegates are poised to meet with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Consuls General from EU member states, and leaders of the European Business Chamber (EuroCham) in Nigeria. Their visit will also encompass tours of various EU-supported initiatives in the state, showcasing advancements in digital technology, innovation, critical infrastructure, connectivity, and migration.
These interactions are strategically aimed at deepening the partnership between the EU and Nigeria, paving the way for enhanced collaboration and mutual growth.
This visit marks the COAFR’s maiden working visit to Nigeria, with the delegation comprising representatives from 17 EU Member States and officials from EU institutions. It is noteworthy that this trip signifies the COAFR’s eleventh visit to the African continent and its third to West Africa, following previous visits to Senegal and Burkina Faso in 2015, as well as Ivory Coast and Ghana in 2019.
The recent surge in high-ranking EU officials visiting Nigeria underscores the immense value the EU places on its partnership with the country, underscoring a commitment to fostering sustainable relationships and driving impactful collaborations.
As the COAFR delegation delves into these crucial discussions and engagements during their stay in Nigeria, the potential for strengthened partnerships, enhanced cooperation, and shared progress between the EU and Nigeria looms large on the horizon.
