Stanbic IBTC, a prominent financial service provider in Nigeria and a member of the esteemed Standard Bank Group, has taken a significant step toward enriching education and fostering sustainable development in communities across the country by adopting four schools through its Adopt-a-School programme.

The four carefully chosen schools for adoption are Methodist School Mbiafun Nkwono Ikono in Akwa Ibom State, Aramoko District School in Ekiti State, Magin Rafi Model Primary School Tudun Wada in Sokoto State, and Mala Kachallah Model School in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Dr. Demola Sogunle, the CEO of Stanbic IBTC, highlighted the strategic significance of this initiative, emphasizing, “Our commitment to adopting these schools underscores our dedication to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies as integral components of our core business practices. We are firm believers in promoting sustainability and creating a positive impact on communities.”

Dr. Demola further underscored the socio-economic benefits of the programme, stating, “Education serves as a cornerstone for societal development. By adopting these schools, we are not only contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 but also investing in the future of these communities.”

As part of this transformative initiative, Stanbic IBTC undertook the renovation and reconstruction of classroom blocks, providing modern and conducive learning environments for students. The classrooms were furnished, computer laboratories were established, and digital resources were made available to empower the students.

Moreover, Stanbic IBTC fostered an inclusive and supportive educational ecosystem by providing 10-seater workstations and renovating toilet blocks, ensuring that students have access to the necessary resources for their educational journey.

The commitment to sustainable construction practices was evident in Stanbic IBTC’s approach, which prioritized passive cooling and ventilation techniques, water conservation through rainwater harvesting, water-efficient plumbing systems, and the installation of energy-efficient appliances and lighting solutions in the facilities.

Furthermore, the company emphasized the sustainable use of local resources to reduce emissions from transportation and support the local economy. Skills development was a key focus, with the deployment and training of local craftsmen for ongoing infrastructure maintenance. Climate-adaptive landscaping was integrated to ensure resilience against the impacts of climate change.

Dr. Demola reiterated Stanbic IBTC’s dedication to responsible corporate citizenship, stating, “Our objective is to create a lasting positive impact on communities through our initiatives, fostering sustainable and thriving environments for generations to come.”

The Adopt-a-School programme is structured upon Stanbic IBTC’s Social, Environmental, and Economic (SEE) framework, aligning with the group’s mission to be a responsible corporate citizen committed to making a tangible and enduring difference in the communities it serves.

In conclusion, Stanbic IBTC’s initiative to transform the education landscape through school adoption stands as a testament to the company’s commitment to driving positive change, promoting sustainability, and investing in the future of Nigeria’s youth. Through such impactful initiatives, Stanbic IBTC is not only shaping the education sector but also paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous future for all.
