Ramadan: Sultan Directs Muslims to Look out for New Moon Today
Muhammad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, recently released a statement pleading with Muslims to pay close attention to the new moon, which marks the beginning of Ramadan.
Deputy Secretary General Salisu Shehu of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) issued a statement containing the directive.
Muslims all over the world observe fasts for 29 or 30 days during the month of Ramadan, which is a time for introspection and observance.
According to the announcement, the fasting period will automatically begin on Tuesday if the moon is not visible on Sunday.
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, the Sultan of Sokoto, has released the following statement: “We extend our warmest greetings to the entire Muslim Ummah on the approaching 1445 AH Ramadan Fast.” The Council’s fervent prayers are for the well-being of every Muslim to engage in the spiritual exercises and reap the full benefits thereof.”
Following the advice of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), the President-General urges the Nigerian Muslim community to diligently search for the crescent moon of Ramadan 1445 AH immediately after sunset on Sunday, March 10, 2024, corresponding to the 29th Sha’aban 1445 AH.
His Eminence will proclaim Monday, March 11, 2024, the first day of Ramadan 1445 AH if that evening’s crescent is seen by people of unwavering integrity.
However, if the moon remains unseen, Tuesday, March 12, 2024, will automatically mark the beginning of Ramadan, 1445 AH.
Additionally, the Sultan has made a heartfelt appeal to well-off Muslims across the nation to extend acts of compassion to the less fortunate in their communities before, during, and after the holy month of Ramadan.
The Islamic calendar, which follows the lunar cycle, advances approximately 10 days earlier each year than the Gregorian calendar.
As Muslims anticipate the arrival of Ramadan, the call to action from the Sultan serves as a reminder of the significance of this sacred period and the importance of unity, charity, and spiritual devotion within the Muslim community.
