The National Orientation Agency (NOA) had previously cautioned Oba Sowemino, highlighting that his actions were in violation of Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007. This section explicitly prohibits the spraying, dancing, or matching on the Naira or any note issued by the bank during social occasions as it constitutes abuse and defacing of the currency, punishable by fines or imprisonment.
In response to the public outcry and in acknowledgment of his error, Oba Sowemino issued an apology, attributing his actions to being carried away in the moment of celebrating his wife. However, despite his apology, the Ethical Committee of the Egba Traditional Council recommended his suspension during their February statutory meeting, chaired by the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.
The suspension entails that Oba Sowemino will not be invited to, nor seen at, any government or public functions for a period of two months. Additionally, he will not receive his salary during this period as a consequence of his actions. The decision was reached after a thorough examination of the viral video by the Ethical Committee, which emphasized the breach of both the CBN Act and the traditional values of the Yoruba institution.
