NIMC Data Harmonization: National Database Integration
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has taken a significant step towards creating a unified database by calling upon 102 government agencies to harmonize their disparate statistics with the National Identification Number (NIN). This move aims to streamline data management and ensure a seamless flow of information across various government bodies in Nigeria.
During a recent management retreat in Lagos, Dr. Alvan Ikoku, Head of the Strategy and Programme Office at NIMC, emphasized the importance of aligning different agencies with NIMC’s 5-Point Agenda on Strategy Development and Implementation. Notable organizations such as the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have already pledged their support to NIMC in this endeavor.
One of the key initiatives driving this collaboration is the deadline set by the NCC for the 224 million subscribers to link their Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards with their NINs by February 28. Failure to comply with this directive may result in the permanent deactivation of telephone lines, underscoring the urgency of data harmonization efforts.
Dr. Ikoku outlined NIMC’s strategic focus areas, which include economic reform, national security enhancement, energy resource utilization, and governance service improvement. To achieve these goals, NIMC plans to ramp up enrolment, integrate data across agencies, issue General Multi-Purpose Cards (GMPC), facilitate access to services through activities, promote financial inclusion via Government-to-Person Payments (G2PP), and encourage public and private sector engagement in leveraging NIN as a foundational identification tool.
In her address, NIMC Director-General, Mrs. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, highlighted the organization’s commitment to ensuring every Nigerian has a NIN. She stressed the importance of bridging the gap between the government and the citizens by providing essential services through NIN issuance. Mrs. Coker-Odusote noted President Bola Tinubu’s support for this initiative, aiming to enhance government-citizen interactions and foster national development.
With over 104 million individuals already registered, NIMC continues its registration drive nationwide and in the Diaspora. Efforts are underway to streamline operations at registration centers and outlets to ensure a smooth and efficient process for all stakeholders.
As NIMC gears up for the challenges ahead, Mrs. Coker-Odusote urged staff members to exhibit courage and discernment in decision-making, emphasizing the profound impact their choices have on the lives of Nigerian citizens. By fostering collaboration among government agencies and promoting data harmonization, NIMC is paving the way for a more cohesive and efficient national database system that will benefit the country as a whole.
