The residents of Egbede in Rivers State’s Ogba/Egbrma/Ndoni Local Government Area have lamented the continuing invasion of their farmlands by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

NewsReport gathered that one of their sons, Nonye Nwa-Omoku, 26, was killed by a herdsman in the community last Thursday without provocation.

An eyewitness, who said he narrowly avoided death, stated the incident happened in the evening when they observed a herder coming to their direction.

“We don’t even know what occurred; we just saw the Fulani man coming towards us,” he says. He then fired a shot in my direction, which I avoided.

“He was now wondering where my brother was. He pursued him and shot him twice. My brother tripped. “We did nothing to him,” he bemoaned.

Confidence Wellington, a related to the disease, stated that the residents, who were mostly farmers, were now terrified to go to their farmlands as a result of the occurrence.

“Fulani herdsmen have been threatening our people with the loss of their farmlands. If my people had, say, 200 kilometers of farmland, Fulani herders have taken over 107 kilometers,” Wellington added.

Ifeanyi Ezeocha, the Youth President of the Egbeda community, criticized the herdsmen’s activities in the region but encouraged the people not to take the law into their own hands.

Nnamdi Omoni, a spokesman for the state police command, confirmed the event, saying the CP has ordered an inquiry to bring anyone found responsible to justice.
