How Incredible Words Fueled a Star’s Meteoric Rise

Mauricio Pochettino, a former Chelsea manager  shared what Cole Palmer told him during their first meeting in his office and the incredible response from him. This interesting detail was revealed by Pochettino, who was, of course, dismissed as Blues boss after just one season.

At this time, Palmer was starting to become the real talisman of the team after arriving from Manchester City – he was really stepping up when the team needed him. But the only issue was that at this time he was pretty much doing it all alone, carrying the creative weight of the team on his shoulders.

Mauricio Pochettino, and Cole Palmer

Pochettino, like any manager who would have Palmer in their side, seemed to love having him there, and he was very impressed with his initial attitude when the attacking midfielder came into his office early on in his spell as Chelsea head coach.

Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, former Chelsea boss Pochettino recalls how Palmer came into his office a few days after joining from Man City. He informed Pochettino that he wanted to do more.

Pochettino recalls this as the moment he realised Palmer would be “top”, highlighting the player’s desire to go above and beyond.

“After a few training sessions, he came to my office: ‘Coach, from the players you’ve had that play in my position, I think I need to do a bit more because I didn’t do too much at Man City. What do you think?’

“I looked at Jesus [Perez], and I said, that desire is top. Just arrived, after a few sessions, because of the demand on a player in that position… [he is] a player with the intelligence to want to do everything.”

In other news Palmer gives very different answer to question about his fitness than Rosenior, speaking with BBC
