Gudaji’s allegations led Emefiele to uncover the revenue realized from stamp duty.

Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), claims that the total amount of money received from stamp duty over the course of six years, from 2016 to 2022, is N370,686 billion.

Muhammed Kazaure, a member of the House of Representatives who represents the Jigawa State communities of Kazaure,

Roni, Gwiwa, and Yankwashi, had highlighted the issue of the alleged theft of stamp duty proceeds of N89 trillion in 2022.

Mr Emefiele, on the other hand, made his N370,686 billion declaration following the Monetary Policy Committee meeting on Tuesday in Abuja, stressing that the CBN was not withholding any N89 trillion.

“Total assets of all banks are N71 trillion, and total deposits in banks are N44 trillion.” From 2016 till date, stamp duty collection has amounted to N370,686 billion.

“The Federal Inland Revenue Service has disbursed N226.451 billion of the money to the Federation Account Allocation Committee, while the balance of N144,235 is in the CBN.”

“The highest stamp collection is N71 billion, which was collected by First Bank,” Mr. Emefiele said.
He added that the CBN had appointed four world-class audit firms to go into the books of banks to verify if there was any unremitted stamp duty.

“If there is any uncollected stamp duty, the banks will pay to the last kobo,” he assured.
