Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was exonerated of terrorism-related charges by the Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday.
NewsReport that following his return to the nation on June 27, 2017, Kanu was charged by the federal government with 15 counts of treasonable felonies and acts of terrorism in the Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a hearing on Thursday, a three-member panel of the appellate court chaired by Justice Hanatu Sankey ruled that the charges brought against the leader of IPOB were clearly illegally extradited to Nigeria because they failed to specify the location, date, and nature of the alleged offenses.
The panel added that the lower court lacks the jurisdiction to adjudicate in the matter due to the abduction and extraordinary rendition of the activist to Nigeria in flagrant violation of the African Union convention and protocol on extradition.
The court noted that the federal government failed to disclose where Kanu was arrested despite the severity of the allegations against him.
