Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-political organization, has dismissed claims that the North has four years left in President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure NewsReport gathered.
Afenifere’s spokesman, Jare Ajayi, called the claim illogical and insisted that it would not stand the test of time.
Ajayi told the Daily Post that the North has ruled Nigeria more than any other region.
Remember that the National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, AYCF, Yerima Shettima, recently stated that the North still has an outstanding tenure after Buhari’s administration.
Former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan ruled Nigeria for 14 years in favour of the South, according to Yerima, while late Musa Yar’Adua and Buhari would have ruled for 10 years in 2023, giving the North an outstanding four years.
In response, Ajayi stated that it would be fair to allow other parts of the country to produce a president.
“It’s interesting that Northern youths can make such a remark, but let me make it clear that we in Afenifere believe in merit and the fact that whoever holds any political office in Nigeria should be fair, just, and govern well,” Ajayi says.
“Where this happens, people don’t mind where the leader comes from, but in Nigeria, it’s always the people from the region or area where the man in charge comes from who benefit the most.
“That is why it is always our turn; if unfortunately, this has not changed, it means that such must continue.
“It is only fair that if power has been concentrated in one region for eight years, it should be transferred to another. Well, one can understand the Northern youths’ sentiment that they still have four years.
“However, from 1960, when Nigeria gained independence, to the present, people of Northern descent have been in power for more than those of the South.
“The sentiment expressed by Northern youths is illogical, and based on Nigerian history, it will not stand the test of time because the North has ruled more than the South.”
