Transcorp Hotels Plc, a leading company, has appointed Dr. Awele Vivien Elumelu, afemale investor, as its chairman of the board.

Transcorp Hotels is the hospitality arm of Transnational Corporation Plc, a listed conglomerate with interests in power, energy, and hotels.

The company is quoted on the Nigerian Exchange under the symbol TRANSCOHOT and has demonstrated strong financial performance, with its stock gaining 34.1 percent year-to-date as of December 15, 2025, and reaching a market capitalization of over ₦1.59 trillion (approximately $4.2 billion).

The company owns and operates the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, Nigeria’s flagship hotel, alongside Aura by Transcorp Hotels and the newly launched Transcorp Event Centre, a 5,000-seat events and entertainment arena.

Awele Elumelu who recently clocked 55, is the founder of Avon Healthcare Limited, a leading health maintenance organization in Nigeria, and CEO of Avon Medical Practice, a network of hospitals and clinics.

She holds an MBBS from the University of Benin and has practiced in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom, later completing executive education at Harvard Business School, IMD Switzerland, and the London School of Economics.

In addition to her healthcare ventures, she chairs Heirs Insurance Brokers and is a founding director of Heirs Holdings Limited.

She also holds a significant 5.1 percent stake in Transcorp Plc, valued at roughly ₦87 billion (approximately $230 million) based on the December 16, 2025, closing price of N42.20 per share.

This combination of executive leadership and substantial equity underscores her growing influence in Nigeria’s traditionally male-dominated corporate sector.

Beyond her corporate responsibilities, Dr. Elumelu is an active advocate for global health and social impact. In 2018, she was appointed the Private Sector Champion for Immunization in Africa by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, championing vaccine access across the continent.

She also serves on the Advisory Board of the Yale Institute for Global Health and is a vocal proponent of “Africapitalism,” promoting private-sector-led economic and social change, particularly for women and children. Outside of her professional and advocacy work, she is an avid marathoner.

As of late 2025, Dr. Elumelu is recognized as one of Nigeria’s wealthiest female investors on the Nigerian Exchange, alongside other prominent figures such as Abolanle Matel-Okoh, Joy Teluwo, and Adaora Umeoji.

Public estimates place his net worth at approximately $2.15 billion. According to insiders, even after factoring in liquidity, country risk, and debt obligations, his wealth is expected to remain above this level, excluding non-quoted assets such as stakes in oil fields, space technology ventures, real estate, and other investments, a significant increase from Forbes’ 2015 estimate of $700 million.
